Gamera was translated into English by two different US companies, Sandy Frank and Titan Productions. Titan's fell into the Public Domain, and the original Japanese company Daiei went bankrupt in the 70's, so some of their licensing fell through the cracks. Toho never had those problems, and when they regained all their copyrights they made an arrangement with Good Time Videos to allow them to keep distributing some of the older Godzilla films that were once PD. Not EVERYTHING from Alpha (or most other PD film distributors) is PD.
